Getting Your One Act Together

Domino Theatre's One-Act Play Festival began as an experiment and has become a huge success with both audiences, actors, and playwrights.
The third edition starts on Thursday with nine productions vying to win the top prize -- an expenses-paid entry into the Eastern Ontario Drama League's One-Act Festival to be held in Kemptville in November...
Kevin Fox is a teacher who estimates he's been in 25 to 30 local productions since he first started acting in shows with the Renaissance Stage Company several years ago. He acts in Dress Rehearsal and also wrote the play.
"It's something I wrote three or four years ago," Fox says. "I was living in Toronto at the time and I thought I'd enter it into the Toronto Fringe Festival. Entry at the time was based on lottery and I never got in.
"It's about a bunch of little stuff I've seen happen in the productions, all the chaos that goes on in the rehearsal."
In this play, the cast is rehearsing an 1880s British murder mystery but struggling even more with off-stage shenanigans such as love affairs.
"Often in rehearsals you won't bother with the stage kiss until the dress rehearsal," Fox says. "In this case, the guy falls in love with the woman from that kiss. It seems kind of ridiculous but I've seen it happen."
Most of the cast in Dress Rehearsal, as well as director Lynn Fennell, were part of Domino's recent production of Lend Me a Tenor. The actors include Fox, Krista Garrett, Rob Horgan, Chloe Ariane Whitehorn, Terry Wade, Matthew Davis, Craig Deacon and Clay Garrett.
